Nerves
Nerve pain is caused by a condition affecting the nerves that carry sensation to the brain and can be difficult to live with. The perception of this pain varies among individuals and could arise as stabbing, tingling, shooting, or burning pains.
About 15 to 20 million Americans are believed to have some form of nerve pain

For some people, it is not known exactly why they develop nerve pain. For many, it is because of certain health problems such as diabetes, shingles, or cancer. Treating the condition is important because doing so can indirectly reduce or stop the pain.
Individuals with nerve pain are often more sensitive (hypersensitivity) to experiences that are not normally painful, such as brushing the skin or cold temperatures. It can be so severe for some individuals that they may not even be able to tolerate clothing or sheets touching the affected area.
In some cases, the signals may not function to register the pain associated with an injury, meaning that in this instance the person may lack a pain response that indicates an injury. This condition results in a loss of feeling or numbness and leads to decreased sensitivity to touch, which can interfere with simple things such as typing, tying your shoes, or brushing your teeth. This numbness or loss of sense of touch can lead to changes in balance and muscle strength and could cause the person to fall. Loss of feeling can also mask damage to traumatized extremities such as feet.
Often, nerve pain is worse at night and as a result, the individual can have difficulty sleeping and this can lead to additional problems.
