Dr. Matthew McLaren is a highly skilled and experienced physician specializing in Interventional Pain Management, now seeing patients at Clearway Pain Solutions in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. He brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in pain management, having completed advanced training during his fellowship at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC where he focused on comprehensive chronic pain care, including advanced interventional pain techniques.

Dr. McLaren earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies, completed his surgical internship at Yale University/St. Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut, and his residency in Anesthesiology at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.  He is double board-certified in Anesthesiology and Interventional Pain Management by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Throughout his career Dr. McLaren has provided compassionate and effective care across a variety of clinical settings, including private practice, in-patient hospitals, and academic centers in the Carolinas and Montana.  His previous roles include serving as Chief Medical Officer in his Montana clinics, and more recently practicing in the Grand Strand area of coastal South Carolina.  His expertise extends across multiple facets of pain management, from acute and chronic joint, muscular, and spine derived pain to complex regional pain syndrome and diabetic neuropathy.

In addition to his clinical experience, Dr. McLaren has a strong research background beginning with his primary clinical investigations while at MUSC, later serving on several device advisory boards assisting in the innovation of today’s most advanced and effective chronic pain treatment modalities. He has contributed to bench studies on pain management techniques and medications, including intrathecal drug delivery systems and treatments for complex pain syndromes, research which has been published in multiple international medical journals.
