Muscle Spasms

What are Muscle Spasms?

Muscle spasms are involuntary contractions of one or more muscles. The onset of the spasm is very fast as the muscle begins to instantly contract for an abnormal amount of time. This is often very painful. Common causes are overuse of that muscle, muscle fatigue, dehydration, or issues with your electrolytes. These kinds of muscle spasms are typically short-lived and can be relieved with gentle stretching, rest and rehydrating. However, when the spasms happen often, are widespread, and chronic, that means they are a symptom of something more serious. When they reach this level, you will not be able to function normally due to the amount of pain you are in and should seek help from a physician.

Causes of Muscle Spasms

If you are experiencing serious muscle spasms, there probably is an underlying skeletal problem. They can be brought on by inflammation or injury to the facet joints of the spine. Severe muscle spasms are also a common symptom of the sciatic nerve being compressed, a herniated disc, and scoliosis. These can lead to the bones in your spine, called vertebrae, pinching nerves, causing extremely painful muscle spasms. The muscles will spasm during the same activities and in the same areas of your muscles.

How Muscle Spasms Are Diagnosed

The most important step in helping you find relief from your muscle spasms is to find the root cause. At your consultation, you will meet one on one with one of our Board Certified Physicians. Here, you will explain the nature of your pain. This will help us identify the underlying cause and that will lead to an effective solution to manage or eliminate your spasms and pain. We will want to know the severity of the pain, when is started, how often it flares up, and if it was caused by a spine or muscle injury (sports related or another type physical activity).

During the diagnostic consultations, KureSmart Pain Management will review:

  • Medical History
  • Chronic Pain Symptoms
  • Past and Present Medications
  • X-rays
  • Physical Examination Results
  • Films
  • MRIs
  • Other tests to diagnose the source of your pain

The goal of our diagnostic consultations is to Listen to your history, Identify the source of chronic pain, and Provide a custom treatment plan to address your needs.

Muscle Spasms Treatment

If you are experiencing extreme discomfort from muscle spasms it is important to see a physician. Most people do not hesitate to seek help since the pain can be unbearable at times. Back pain coupled with spasms is generally treatable. There is no reason to live with that kind of pain. At KureSmart Pain Management, we can help you manage pain, control muscle spasms, and prevent your condition from worsening. We will design a customized treatment plan that will help you find relief from your pain. Our team of multi-specialty physicians and physical therapist are experienced in helping patients manage their pain and live a normal life again.

How Can I Prevent Muscle Spasms?

Preventing muscle spasms is accomplished by preventing injury to your back/spine. This could be as simple as losing a few pounds, maintaining good posture, and by getting moderate daily exercise. Staying consistently active throughout the entire day (not lying around all day) and not overworking your muscles are also important. Back pain and muscle spasms can easily prevent you from performing daily activities. Your back does a lot of work for you, so it is a good idea to take care of it.
